Gratituesday: Laura Ingalls Wilder
On the way back from our trip to the Hamm Bash...we made a super fun little side stop. And it was sooooo cool. We stopped at the Little House on the Prairie House. It was really cool...even though not their actual house...it is a good replica...and probably very close to the actual location.
The thing I am grateful though is for finding this quote. It is hanging on my bedroom door right now...and I love it. The lady I purchased it from mentioned she thought it should be made into billboards and posted allll over the country. I agree.
"It is best to be honest and truthful, to make the most of what we have, to be happy with simple pleasures, and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong."
--Laura Ingalls Wilder
I'm grateful we stopped as a family.
I'm grateful the girls love these stories.
I'm grateful that LIW is still blessing people.
I'm grateful that because of Jesus...I can be courageous when things go wrong.

Forgive me Lord, for I am jealous.
ReplyDeleteI want to go there! Where is it?
I love that quote! It is SO TRUE!
I LOVED the Little House books (and show) when I was growing up! Mansfield, MO, where she and Almonzo moved to after they married, and where she wrote all of her books, is about an hour and a half from where I grew up. Their home, with many of the original furnishings, has been preserved and they also have a museum that includes some of her original, hand-written (in longhand!) manuscripts. You can also visit her grave. If your girls love LIW so much, you should definitely consider taking a weekend trip out there sometime. They'd love it!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I find it amusing that the first two posters on this thread are named Laura.
WHERE IS THIS?
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, I'm obsessed with LIW. Her house in Mansfield is on the way to my sister's. Last year we stopped (again) on the way home. I loooooved it. We saw Pa's fiddle. They have a festival they get it out and play it every year.
I am planning a vacation to North Dakota, and on the way stopping in de Smet south dakota to see her other house.
ahahahah You guys are soooo funny!
ReplyDeleteIt is just a few miles outside of Independance, KS. This is where they lived in "Little House on the Praire" -- where Pa and Ma built the house and it fell on her ankel and all the Indians were around and they got Fever "n" ague. :)
There is a website for it. It's littlehouseonthepraire.com
It has a map and stuff. Did you notice the little china doll above the fireplace!!!!!!!! They have lots of correspondance from her...and an amazing little gift shop and a few other things too...like an old post office and a schoolhouse.
Oh, how fun for you guys! I've been to both the Independence location and the DeSmet location. I think I liked DeSmet better, but only a little. I definitely want to get to Mansfield too! Maybe we should plan a bloggy girl's getaway to the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead??? LOL
ReplyDeleteI used to watch the show all the time, and I still watch reruns now when nothing else is on. I don't think I ever read the books though - I was more into Anne of Green Gables.
ReplyDeleteOOOO what a neat trip. Now we have a stop when we go to Noesho, MO to see the in-laws in Nov. It is a very good quote!
ReplyDeleteMy mom read us all the Little House books growing up. We loved them. They always made me very hungry, especially Farmer Boy!
ReplyDeleteI told Dirk where this one was and he was very un-enthusiastic. "Oh great, another one."
ReplyDeleteHe likes the books too but I think he's tired of my obsession with pioneer women and LIW. I even have the show on DVD even though it is all a big made up LIE. Oh well, I still like it. They should make a movie out of the long winter! But then Hollywood would have to add dirty words and nudity so maybe not.
I got the whole set of the books from my Aunt Sharon (who lives very stinking near Independence, KS) when I was little. I devoured them!
ReplyDeleteI still love the books, only I just sold that original set at the garage sale. Maybe some other little girl will catch the dream of the pioneers.
